I was a Grass Fellow at Both the MBL and Friday Harbor (1990 and 1991). Here are a few "one-liners": 1. This experience shaped my scientific career in such a way that I am still in contact with many of the "old" Grass Fellows and meet with them every opportunity I get" 2. The Grass Fellow Program is unforgettable. The comradary of doing science together, sharing knowledge and expertise and enjoying the superb region was a wonderful way to spend a summer. 3. The contacts and friendships I made over this summer consolidated what has been an uninterrupted collaborative association with many US scientists. The trip over from Australia to the US is always worth it. Good luck with the new website. We are also building a new Website for a large Lab. We will be sure to list your website under Useful Links and research opportunities.

I became a Grass Fellow in 1990 and then assisted the Foundation as Associate Director in 1994 and 1995 while Ken Muller assisted as Director. The time spent at the MBL was keystone for my growth as an independent investigator. Those marvelous years will stay in my memory forever. I am currently working trying to understand the permeability properties of Gap Junction Channels at the University of Utah. I yearly post the Grass Fellowship announcement at the U and last year, Qiang Liu, a postdoc from the Brain Institute at the University of Utah was selected as a fellow. The Brain Institute made an important announcement about this honor and I participated by stating how relevant it was for me to be involved with the foundation during my early years in research. You can find it at: http://brain.utah.edu/portal/site/brain/menuitem.b99f7df401ce98fd54eef041d1e916b9/?vgnextoid=c8df01e1708a8210VgnVCM1000001c9e619bRCRDI hope that the following statements can also help you with this project. Thanks to the Grass Fellowship Program, I met at the beach the professors that wrote the books I needed for my PhD. More amazingly, I could talk to them in an informal environment and discuss my projectsThanks to the Grass Fellowship Program I tested myself as in independent investigator with a project I wrote, with the resources the foundation provided, and with the support of peer fellows and directorsSharing a summer with highly ranked professors in a competitive environment enormously stimulated my desire to become an independent investigator as soon as possible
